Is your computer ready for Daylight Savings Time on March 11?
|
|
|
Normally, your computers handle the spring and fall Daylight Savings
Time changes automatically because the change dates are built into the
operating system software. I bet you didn’t even realize it was
being done for you! This year, Congress amended the Uniform Time
Act of 1996 by changing the start and end dates of Daylight Savings
Time (DST) beginning in 2007. Daylight Savings Time will now begin
March 11 and will end on November 4 (instead of the usual April and
October dates we are all used to). Since these dates are
different than what the computers know, this change will require
modification to your computer operating systems. In other words,
the internal clocks on your systems (servers, PC/workstations, tablets,
and handhelds) may require adjustment to accommodate the change.
Though the impact to most computers is expected to be low, please be
aware that time-specific functions may be off by one hour, such as
scheduled system backups or data uploads. We strongly recommend
that you apply the following updates to your system. If you need
additional help, call our office. Our Systems Engineers will be
available to assist you.
For users of all Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, there is a
very easy to use tool called TZedit that is available through the
Microsoft Website. TZedit will let you edit the time zone information
manually in Windows.
To download and start TZedit, simply follow these steps:
1) Logon to the workstation or server.
2) Open an Internet browser.
3) Click on the link below to save the file to your desktop.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/8/a/58a208b7-7dc7-4bc7-8357-28e29cdac52f/tzedit.exe
4) Double-click the saved file to unzip the TZedit program.
The default location to save the file is C:/Program files/
TZedit.
5) Click unzip.
6) Click close.
7) Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on the
C:drive, then double-click on the Program Files folder, then
double-click on the TZedit folder.
8) Double-click on the TZedit File (Time Zone Editor Utility) to start the Time Zone Editor.
To manually modify time zone settings by using the Time Zone Editor, follow these steps:
1) Download and start Time Zone Editor as explained above.
2) In the Time Zones list, select your time zone. For our area, click (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada), and then click Edit.
3) In the Edit Time Zone dialog box, click to select the Automatically set Daylight Saving Time check box.
4) Specify the correct daylight saving time start date and end date as follows.
5) In the Start Day box, click the number of the day, the corresponding day of the week, and the month that you want. For example, click Second, click Sunday, and then click March. Then select the time that you want to start daylight saving time. For example, select 2:00 A.M.
6) In the Last Day box, click the number of the day, the corresponding day of the week, and the month that you want. For example, click First, click Sunday, and then click November. Then select the time that you want to end daylight saving time. For example, select 2:00 A.M.
7) In the Daylight Bias list, select how
long you want the time to change when daylight saving time is in
effect. For example, to set the clock forward 1 hour, leave the default
setting of +1:00.
8) To finish with this time zone, click OK.
9) If you wish to edit other time zones, select each one and
then repeat steps a-e. As long as your computer stays here in
the Eastern Time Zone, there is no need to change the other zones.
(For more information about the time zones that have changed,
click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base: 931836
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931836/) February 2007 cumulative time
zone update rollup for Microsoft Windows operating systems.)
10) When you have finished, click Close.
The last step is to activate the changes that you just completed. To do that, follow these last few steps:
1) Double-click the digital clock in the lower right-hand corner of your screen. (If you don’t see it, then Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel, and then double-click Date/Time.)
2) Click the Time Zone tab.
3) Select a different time zone than our local (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada) time zone, and then click Apply.
4) Click (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada), and then click OK to set it back where it belongs.
5) Close the Windows Time Zone Editor.
If you are one of our Linux/Unix clients, we will be contacting you over the next 3 days to arrange for updates to your system.
If you do not have Internet access on your computer or server, you
will not be able to access TZedit. Please let us know and we
will assist you in your update.
If you need any assistance with Day Light Savings updates, please do
not hesitate to call our office. To better assist you, we will need to
know the type of operating system you are using (Windows 98, 2000, NT,
XP or Linux/Unix) so please be sure to give this information to our
office staff.
Thanks and Happy Daylight Savings Time! Mike Anderson, Director of IT Services

Breakfast of Champions
|
|
|

On August 24, 2005 with sausage and cheese casseroles, fresh fruit and a variety of homemade muffins, OneWhoServes, Inc. and the Asheville Housing Authority celebrated five years of a great relationship. Five years before, the Asheville Housing Authority was one of the first big clients Gordon Walton's one-man computer company signed on. Walton was familiar with the Asheville Housing Authority through his previous nonprofit experience in Asheville, and walked in to the agency one day to see if they needed any computer support. Two days later, he was setting up 6 new computers and a beautiful relationship began.
Several years and staff increases later, the relationship between the wonderful staff at the Asheville Housing Authority and OneWhoServes, Inc. is that of a family. We all look forward to the celebration of the anniversary breakfast each year in August.

Welcome to the Family, Ashland Avenue!!
|
|
|

In October of 2005, several members of the OneWhoServes, Inc. staff donned rubber gloves and gathered trash bags for the first cleanup of our newly adopted street, Ashland Avenue. Ashland Avenue is in downtown Asheville and runs from Patton Avenue to McDowell Street. Our first pickup garnered several hundred cigarette butts, one hubcap, and 4 large bags of trash. We are delighted to serve our community and get to know it (and its refuse) better through the Adopt-A-Street program.

This software was developed for small to medium sized nonprofits and priced affordably, with discounts for smaller agencies. GiFT was designed to be easy to use, regardless of computer expertise, which allows agencies to utilize volunteers to enter data.
"People in nonprofits are constantly frustrated by their lack of tools, but don't have the budget to buy high end products to get the basic functions. Our goal is to provide a full featured, quality product for small to medium sized nonprofits at a price they can reach," says Gordon Walton, President of OneWhoServes, Inc.

Five Years Old and Still Growing Fast
|
|
|

In April, 2005, OneWhoServes, Inc. Computer and Business Services celebrates five years of doing business in the Asheville area. Coinciding with this anniversary, the company is releasing their first full featured software product, a web-based fundraising tool for nonprofits called Gifts, Friends and Time.
OneWhoServes, Inc. was founded by Gordon Walton in 2000 after he had been working in the community for several years as the one-man IT department for a large nonprofit. Walton was hearing the same thing over and over again - people were having difficulty finding reliable support for their home and business computers.
"In talking to people who couldn't find good support and looking around town for myself, I really saw a need for responsive, client oriented computer service that was focused on the business or the person, rather than the computer," Walton said. He began to feel a calling.
With a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Walton built a career around the ins and outs, literally, of computers and software. He spent four years at Texas Instruments designing computers for the seismic oil industry. He spent another nine years at The Analytic Sciences Corporation, a consulting firm in Massachusetts, designing computer and interface configurations and writing software for special purpose government projects. "I designed these things and worked on them for five or six years before I came around to the keyboard side of the computer," Walton says. "I knew a lot more about how computers worked than how to use one."
When he did come around to the keyboard, Walton focused on yet another aspect of the technology industry. He provided customer support and sales for SystemSoft, a Massachusetts software company that sold firmware to motherboard and computer manufacturers.
When Walton moved to Asheville in 1995, he was looking for a more "hands on," people oriented position. He took the position at the Asheville organization and fine tuned his IT skills. He did the purchasing, installing, and upgrading of all of the Unix and Windows computers for the large staff, performed staff training, and developed database software for the organization. With all that "hands on" experience, he realized that there was a need he could fill in the greater community. "I thought to myself, if I could do everything for one company, I could do a lot of things for a lot of companies."
Because of his extensive background in computers, combined with his reputation in Asheville, Walton had no problem building his own business. "By that time, I knew a lot of people in Asheville. A lot of my business came from word of mouth. People knew me as The Computer Guy." Gordon Walton opened the doors to OneWhoServes, Inc. Computer and Business Services in April of 2000.
Five years later, Walton's business has grown from one employee (himself) to a staff of eight. The office has moved from a spare bedroom in his home in Black Mountain to a spacious office building in downtown Asheville.
OneWhoServes, Inc. now houses a strong Information Technology department that serves over 100 clients in the area and a software department that develops web enabled data management systems, and now software products.
Gifts, Friends and Time nonprofit gift management (GiFT) has been in the making for several years. Through his own experience designing nonprofit donation and volunteer management software with one of the best development directors in the area, Walton understood that the need was there. "People in nonprofits are constantly frustrated by the lack of tools, but don't have the budget to buy high end products to get the basic functions. Our goal is provide a full featured, quality product for small to medium nonprofits at a price they can reach." GiFT is a web-based product available to nonprofits at discounted rates based on the size of their annual budgets. The product will soon be available to demo online.
When asked about the growth of OneWhoServes, Inc., Walton keeps it simple.
"I did not set out to build a big company. The real key to success has been the word of mouth. And that word of mouth has come from keeping the focus on the customer and fulfilling their needs. If you take care of your clients, everything else takes care of itself."

The Sky's the Limit
|
|
|

On a crisp Tuesday evening in October 2004, several employees of OneWhoServes, Inc. and their family members gathered at the Folk Art Center on the BlueRidge Parkway. Besides enjoying the local crafts and each other's company, this group was celebrating what is becoming an annual tradition. For the second year in a row, OneWhoServes, Inc was awarded the Sky High Growth award by the Asheville Chamber of Commerce.
Each year the Asheville Chamber of Commerce recognizes the businesses from its 2000 members that are growing in sales and/or employees with the Sky High Growth Award. This year, OneWhoServes, Inc., along with 37 other local businesses including Devco Homes, North Carolina Stage Company, Mountain Microenterprise Fund, and YMCA of Western North Carolina, was recognized. Together, these 37 businesses represent more than $116 million in sales and more than 2500 full and part time jobs in the Buncombe County area.
OneWhoServes, Inc. has grown over 70% each year for the last two years. In November of 2003, OneWhoServes, Inc. expanded from a small home office in Black Mountain to a spacious office building on West Haywood Street in Asheville. Owner Gordon Walton attributes the success of the business to customer relationships. "We grow to meet customer demand, not just because we have a focus to try to get bigger. The basis of our success is all about customer service." Walton says it is also very rewarding to be a part of local growth. "To be recognized as someone contributing to the local economy is a great thing."
